18 Pupils Narrowly Escape Death As Speeding Truck Hits School Bus In Lagos

Posted by George on Fri 03rd Jul, 2015 - tori.ng

A divine intervention has averted what would have been a mass burial of school pupils in Okota area of Lagos state when a truck with a failed break rammed into a bus carrying school pupils. Luckily, no one was hurt.

According to Daily Sun, a bloody accident that would have made the headlines of newspapers in Nigeria was averted in Okota area of Lagos state on Tuesday. It happened that a bus was conveying some pupils of Nursery and Primary school in Lagos home when a truck battling with a failed brake in the pot-hole ridden road of Ago Palace Way, Okota rammed into the school bus.

Eyewitness reports revealed that  the driver of the truck lost control while trying to avoid the several tankers parked along the road. In the process, the truck accidentally hit the vehicle carrying the children. The impact damaged the doors of the vehicle. The terrified children screamed and wept in fear. They had to be rescued through the window.

Prince Okwara, who is also the Chairman, Green Field Estate Community Development Association, recalled that sometime ago, a container fell on the car of a young couple driving on the road and crushed the duo to death while they were going to church for a wedding ceremony.

According to him, motorists are exposed to road hazards at night due to the blockage by the tankers that have created a limited space for vehicles to pass. Efforts to call the attention of the past Governor of Lagos state Raji Fashola to the problem failed as he lamented.

“We want to thank God that the 18 nursery and primary school pupils escaped unhurt. Just imagine what would have happened if those children, most of them under the age of 10, had died.

We have written several letters to the government of Lagos State to notify them about the dangers the trucks that are parking on this road are causing .

We have also made a lot of peaceful protests to draw the attention of government to the plight of the people living in this area, all to no avail.

It seems government is waiting for something like this to happen before they can swing into action. I want to once again use this opportunity to draw their attention so that they will come to assist in clearing this road of the menace of articulated vehicles. The recklessness and manner of these trucks and trailers are causing untold hardship to the other users of the road",
Okwara said.
