Keeping your underwear on in bed can have some serious health consequences.

Both men and women should beware of nodding off in their undergarments because boxers and bras can wreak havoc with our bodies.

According to new advice from a surgeon, ladies should whip off their lingerie to prevent their boobs from heading south.

Previously people believed that wearing a bra in bed could help to keep your chest perky, but sleeping in supportive underwear can actually be the cause of sagging.

What’s more, the health expert warns that bras can also restrict the lymph glands in breasts – which are responsible for flushing out toxins.

Dr Seth Rankin from the London's Doctor's Clinic told Cosmopolitan that boobs will eventually sag as you age because tissue loses its elasticity over time – so there really isn’t any point wearing a bra for support in the sack anyway.

He said: “When you're lying down flat, the effect of gravity pushes the breast tissue back towards your chest, instead of down towards your toes.

“So wearing a bra (the purpose of which is ultimately to support breasts from below) is essentially redundant in bed, as breasts naturally compress back down onto the chest.”

Dr Seth continued: "If your bra is too tight, you may be restricting your blood supply to the breasts and surrounding areas.

“A tight bra may restrict the flow of lymph to the many important lymph nodes around the breast and armpit, hindering the system's vital function of flushing toxic waste-products from the body.”

Meanwhile men’s health expert Dr Brian Steixner suggests that lads should stop wearing underwear in bed because it's bad for your health.

He warned men that they risk getting fertility problems and it’s better to sleep in the buff.

The medic, who is director of the Institute for Men’s Health at Jersey Urology Group, said sleeping in boxers or briefs can affect the quality of sperm because mens' crotches become too warm during the night.

He said: "Your nether regions need to be just the right temperature in order to optimise sperm production.

"More bacteria makes for a higher likelihood that any chafed or irritated skin down there becomes infected."

On the flip side sleeping nude has a number of health benefits.

It helps to cool down the body which in turn aids in lowering blood pressure.
