A tragic incident has claimed the life of a man identified as Ademola Asimiyu who was shot dead over a woman by 43-year-old man, Adebisi Akinrinmola.

Akinrinmola has been arrested by the men of the Ogun State Police Command over the murder. Both of them were dating the same woman but it was gathered that Asimiyu was not happy and confronted Akinrinmola.

While speaking on the incident, a police source revealed that the incident occurred at about 3pm at Ajebo Village in Ijebu-Igbo area of the state on Sunday.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspect claimed that the deceased has been threatening him for quite some time now over the woman he was dating.

Punch reports that the suspect also claimed that the 36-year-old Asimiyu had accused him of snatching the woman from him and had warned him to leave the woman

Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police,  said trouble started when the deceased met the suspect with the said woman while returning from the farm and a hot argument ensued between the two men.

He said, “The suspect claimed that it was the deceased that brought out a machete and made attempt to hit him which prompted him too to bring out a dane gun and shot him to death.”

After the tragic incident, Oyeyemi said a distress call was made to the police Divisional Headquarters at Ijebu Igbo, and the Divisional Police Officer, Agene James, led detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested and the dane gun recovered.

He said the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

Iliyasu warned residents of the state of consequences of jungle justice, stressing that the law would deal decisively with anyone caught taking laws into his own hand.

He described the incident as barbaric which “is not acceptable in any sane society.”
