There was Another Suicidal Woman Who Jumped Inside Lagos Lagoon Today - Lagos Police Commissioner

Less than a week after a medical doctor, committed suicide by jumping off Third Mainland Bridge into lagoon, two women have on Friday, attempted to do likewise.

Recall that we reported few hours ago that a woman identified as Taiwo Titilayo Momoh who attempted to jump into the Lagoon from the popular Third Mainland Bridge on Friday, March 24, was rescued by the operatives of the Lagos State Police Command.
 
According to the Lagos State Commisioner of Police Fatai Owoseni, who spoke with newsmen at the Police Command headquaters on Friday, another woman identified as Mrs Abigael Ogunyinka also attempted to commit suicide after jumping into lagoon of the popular Third Mainland Bridge.
 
The Police boss said that the woman blamed her suicide attempt on indebtedness as she can no longer cope with life, adding that the police in the state would no longer allow pedestrians to walk on bridges in the state.
 
The commissioner also stated that as part of the efforts to curb the rising state of suicide and attempted suicide in the state, the police would no longer allow drivers to park on the bridge without any tangible reason.
 
It was gathered that Mrs Ogunyinka was early on Friday, rescued by local fishermen and policemen, after she jumped into the lagoon from the Carter Bridge.
 
The woman had blamed her suicide attempt on her indebtedness, saying she had tried in vain to pay the debt, which according to her, was about one hundred and fifty thousand naira (N150,000).
 
While speaking on her reason to end her life, Mrs Ogunyinka said she jumped into the lagoon because she was owing N150,000 borrowed from a microfinance bank, adding that she collected loan to fund her ‘amala’ business and has been in default for two weeks.
 
She said would not be able to face the shame and embarrassment.
 
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Fatai Owoseni, said that the police is trying to investigate the circumstances behind the attempt by Ogunyinka to end her life, adding the that the force is making efforts to authenticate the woman’s story by contacting the bank and help pay.
