4 Mobile Policemen Detained After PDP Chieftain Slumped and Died in Custody

 

About four mobile policemen are currently in detention at the Sapele Police Station in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State over the death of Mr. Lucky Ayomanor, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Director of the Delta State Direct Labour Agency (DLA), SaharaReporters reports.

 

Mr. Ayomanor died on Wednesday after he was arrested for alleged possession of unlicensed firearm

 

SaharaReporters reports that Mr. Ayomanor was stopped by policemen on “stop and search” duty along Gana Road in Sapele while on his way to visit an elder brother.

 

A search on his Sports Utility Vehicle allegedly yielded a fully loaded pump action rifle. The policemen immediately arrested him because he could not produce a license for the gun found in his car.

 

According to SaharaReporters, a source in the community revealed that Mr. Ayomanor fainted as he was being taken the police station and the policemen attempted to take him to a hospital, but he died on the way.

 

“Mr. Ayomanor cooperated with the policemen. But one of the officers brought out a rifle and said it was discovered in his car. He denied that he owned the gun and they started beating him,” said a source.

 

Brother to the deceased, Mr. Michael Okor, described the claim of the police that a gun was found in Mr. Ayomanor’s car as a fabrication.

 

"The Police are only lying to cover up what actually transpired. People who knew my brother can attest to his peaceful nature. My brother was a peace-loving man. What would he be doing with a pump action gun and fully loaded one for that matter?” he asked.

 

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed Mr. Ayomanor’s death and the detention of the four mobile. He, however, insisted that the politician was arrested because a loaded pump-action gun was found in his car.

 

"After his arrest, he developed a strange illness while being taken to the station and died on his way to the hospital,” Mr. Aniamaka said.

 

The news of his death immediately sparked anger in the community, with youths threatening to avenge Mr. Ayomanor’s death. Tension remains high in Sapele, as the town’s youths continue to boil.
