Nigeria Police Arrest 26 Suspected Kidnappers

The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to curb the spate of kidnappings as well as other security threats with several suspects apprehended.

The police have arrested 26 suspected kidnappers along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and recovered arms and ammunition.
 
Parading the suspects on Tuesday, the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said exhibits recovered from the suspects included three AK rifles, four single barrel, two cut-to-size guns, one locally-made revolver and pistol and a set of military camouflage.
 
Others are a set of military raincoat, two pairs of military boots, a jack knife, assorted male and female clothes, charms, 69 rounds of live ammunition, 28 cartridges and two expended cartridges.
 
Moshood said, “Five different vicious and notorious kidnap-for-ransom gangs were dislodged and busted in their hideouts along Suleja-Lambata-Bida and Minna Roads in Niger State.

“They all confessed to the offence and admitted to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of the crime.

“Most of the suspects were identified by the victims for being responsible for their kidnap. All the suspects will be arraigned in court on completion of Investigation.”
 
Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 6,455 senior police officers contained in a recommendation from the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim.
 
The commission in a statement by its spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said it returned to the IG all recommendations pertaining to special promotions as its special committee investigating the issue had began sitting.
 
A breakdown of the new promotions shows that Commissioner of Police, Hilda Ibifuro -Harrison, was promoted to the next rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police while two Deputy Commissioners of Police, Ajani  Babatunde and Olukola Shina were promoted to the rank of CP.
 
The statement added that 47 Superintendents of Police were elevated to Chief Superintendents of Police and 498 Deputy Superintendents of Police to the next rank of Superintendents of Police.
 
It explained that 5,907 Inspectors were also promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendents of Police, while DCPs Mohimi Edgal and Aji Janga,  were appointed acting CPs.

“The promotions and other decisions of the commission, signed by its Chairman, Dr. Mike  Okiro, will be conveyed to the IG for implementation,” the statement added.
