Terrible: Man Beats Stepfather to Death With a Hammer Then Calmly Drives to KFC For Dinner (Photos)

A man has been served with a commensurate punishment after he was found out to have battered his own stepfather to death with a hammer.

Martyn Ford killed his stepfather

A thug who battered his stepfather to death with a lump hammer before calmly driving to KFC for dinner has been jailed for 20 years.

Martyn Ford, 38, pummelled Ian Baker so many times that blood spattered up the walls of his house in Bristol.

Mr Baker's devastated family shouted 'see you in 20 years' when Ford was sentenced in court today.

The 58 year old, who was married to Ford's mother Caroline until her death in 2013, had supported him for years but decided to cut him off when the thug was released from prison earlier this year.

Amid a tense family feud, Ford went to Mr Baker's house to start clearing out his possessions.

He then returned the next day while Mr Baker's sons were out and an argument erupted between the two men.

Ford batted his stepfather in the head, fracturing his skull. He then dragged him gurgling blood into the living room and bludgeoned his lifeless body.

The thug made off with a gold chain, expensive camera and two money jars from the kitchen, and wrenched a wardrobe off the wall upstairs to get to a small safe.

He also removed the CCTV hard drive from a bedroom upstairs to cover his tracks and attempted to clean up the blood on June 4 this year.

Neighbours heard thumping and banging as Ford attacked his helpless relative.

Ford, of no fixed address, today admitted murder - which happened just two days after Ford was released from prison.

Prosecutor Richard Smith said: 'Whatever took place, it culminated in Mr Ford viciously assaulting his stepfather.

'He had been hit while he was on the ground then dragged to the living room.

'This defendant's intention in that second attack was to make sure his stepfather was dead before he left the premises.'

Ford had a 'strained' relationship with his family and the 'troublesome stepson' had been hassling his stepfather for money - to the disapproval of his other children.

Mr Smith said 'Mr Baker was well aware that his children and stepchildren disapproved of his supporting his stepson.
'He went out of his way to disguise the fact that he was in contact with him or that he was visiting his Brislington home.'

Mr Baker had collected his stepson from the train station that afternoon and driven him back to the house to cut ties once and for all.

He had seemed 'stressed and uneasy' on the weekend of his death.

Ford had a debt to pay off and had 'no doubt thought that his stepfather would or could provide him with funds,' said Mr Smith.

'But Mr Baker's misplaced empathy for Mr Ford was coming to an end.

'Mr Ford's sister was sufficiently worried about this that she suggested he should have someone with him when he confronted him.

'At 6.11pm Mr Ford was collected by a taxi and left his stepfather dead on the living room floor of his own home.'

Ford, who was found with £1260 in cash on him, rang his debtor at 6.26pm to say he had the money.

He then went to a KFC drive through with a friend and went drinking in the King William pub where he was seem examining the valuable camera he had stolen.

Ford had previously headbutted his stepfather when he was told he was no longer welcome in the family home, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Mr Baker, who has three sons from a previous relationship and two other stepchildren, had taken early retirement because of ill health and his wife Caroline Ford died in 2013.

His sons returned at 7.30pm and thought it was strange no one was in, but when they sat down they suddenly saw their father's feet sticking out from behind the sofa.

Defensive wounds showed Mr Baker had tried to protect himself from the repeated blows.

Edward Burgess QC, defending, said Ford had never really recovered emotionally from the death of his mother and had spent most of his life behind bars.

He has been jailed on two separate occasions for battery for 5 months and has previous convictions for dishonesty.

The CCTV hard drive and weapon used to murder his stepfather were never recovered.

Family, friends and neighbours have paid tribute to 'true gent' Mr Baker.

One woman described Ian, who used to work as an airduct installer, as a 'true gent'.

Judge Peter Blair QC said: 'Mr Baker had a solid generous heart and was much loved by his children, his grand-children and his other stepchildren.'
