Some residents said 10 passengers, four motorcycles and bags of farm produce were in the boat when it capsized.

A resident, Ibrahim Garba, said the incident happened on Thursday morning when the villagers were taking their farm produce to the market via River Gurara, adding that four of the deceased were from Eju village while one person was from Adalami village.

Ajiya, who visited the community on Saturday, expressed shock and sadness over the death of the travellers and assured that the council would make effort to recover their bodies.

He urged the family of the victims to take solace in God and pray for their souls to rest in peace.

It was learnt that the ill-fated speed boat was donated by the council chairman early this year to residents of the community.
