Tragedy! 2 Pregnant Women Drown in Niger

Two pregnant women have lost their lives during a heavy downpour in Niger State.

 
Two pregnant women drowned in Koro district of Borgu Local government of Niger State during a heavy downpour. The women were trying to relocate to a better place after heavy downpour destroyed their village. 
 
According to the public relations officer of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Audu Hassaini, about 16 local governments were affected by the downpour. 
 
He said: “So far, 16 local governments have been affected out of the 25 local governments of the state which include Mokwa, Lavun, Borgu, Agwara, Lapai, Katcha, Agaie, Bida, Edati, Gbako and some parts of Bosso, Chanchaga, Shiroro, Munyan and Paikoro local governments respectively,” 
 
He also said about 460 communities have been affected by the recent flooding which has already taken the lives of two pregnant women.
 
“Presently, we are working round the clock with our local government emergency committees to ascertain the exact number of individuals that were affected,” he said.
 
The governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello urged the agency to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage in order to help those affected by the flood. He also pledged the government's support to help all those affected by the flood. Bello called on Federal government and other donor agencies to help the state in manage the disaster.
