A newborn baby has been dumped by its mother near a police station in Ilie, Olorunda North Local Council Development Area of Osun State, Punch Metro reports.

Though information about how the baby got to the spot is sketchy, residents of the area told Punch Metro that the newborn baby was found wrapped in clothes late on Tuesday after the mother disappeared from sight.

A resident of llie, who simply identified himself as Tayo Abayomi, told Punch Metro, “A mentally unstable woman must have dumped the baby there shortly after giving birth on Tuesday evening.

“There was an attempt to trace the woman immediately the newborn baby was found near the police station, but the effort didn’t yield any meaningful result.

“But we are sure that a mentally unstable woman must have done it. People around here have that idea and we are still trying to trace her. She gave birth to the by the roadside. We have found the spot where she gave birth to the baby.”

A public service announcement monitored on the state-owned television station called for information that could lead to the mother of the newborn baby.
