Blessing Edet, a 24-year-old woman, accused of stabbing her boyfriend, Edet Ebong to death over an engagement ring was yesterday ordered by an Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos to open her defence.

New Telegraph reports that Edet allegedly killed her 33-year-old boyfriend on August 18, 2015, at his apartment, at No. 1 Falana Street, Ogombo, Lekki, Lagos and was docked on a one count charge of murder.

An investigative police officer, Asp Adetola Elumero, who testified before the court, said that one Esther Ebong (deceased sister) reported the incident at the Nigerian police station, Ogombo on August 20, 2015.

Elumero, who was led in evidence by the State Prosecuting counsel, O. A Bajulaiye-Bishi, said that the deceased’s sister stated that her young brother fought with his girlfriend at his apartment over an engagement ring he gave to her.

The IPO said that the complainant reported that it was during the fight that Edet allegedly stabbed Ebong with a kitchen knife and he slumped.

“She also said that the victim was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he later died” the IPO said.

Narrating the outcome of his investigation, Elumero said, “it was discovered that the accused and the deceased were lovers both living together at the said apartment.

“The deceased proposed to marry the accused in which he gave her an engagement ring.

“On the August 18, the deceased came back from work and asked the suspect to prepare food (indomie) for him. While the suspect was preparing the food, the deceased noticed she wasn’t wearing her engagement ring.

“And when he confronted her on the reason behind the missing ring on her finger, a fight ensured. It was during the fight that the suspect stabbed the deceased with a kitchen knife. He thereafter died fee hours after being rushed to the hospital.

“When I visited the crime scene with my team, we took a photograph of the deceased while his remains were deposited at the General hospital Lagos Island mortuary.

“The post mortem examination report revealed that the deceased died for a stab injury to the abdomen,” he said.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor had earlier tendered one blood stained T-shirt tagged AKTC; pieces of broken glass; one cutlass; and post mortem reports of the deceased, as exhibits before the court.

Bajulaiye-Bishi told the court that prosecution has closed its case and the defence is to open their case.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo thereafter adjourned the matter till August 7 for defence.
