The House of Reps leadership has constituted 97 standing committees to perform oversight functions on government ministries, agencies and departments.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has announced the constitution of 97 Standing Committees to oversight various ministries, departments and agencies of government (MDAs).

He made this know at Thurday's plenary.

The number of the committees increased from 89 in the 7th Assembly to 97 in this dispensation as new committees were created while others were splited into two as against the Speaker’s earlier pledge to trim down the number to avoid duplication of functions.

The committee will oversee works of various ministries, departments and agencies, ensuring that all activities follow due process.

Standing committees thoroughly review legislation submitted by legislators and vote on changes to bills. These committees will review research, hold expert hearings and examine material evidence regarding legislation.

Bills that pass standing committees go to the full chamber for consideration
