A terminally-ill cystic fibrosis sufferer fulfilled a dying wish to chat with President Donald Trump on the phone.
Jay Barrett, 44, was called by the president Tuesday night at his sister Bridgette Hoskie’s home in New Haven, Connecticut, where he is receiving end-of-life care.
Trump told Barrett, who is an avid supporter of the Republican president’s administration: ‘All right, Jay, you look handsome to me. I just saw a picture of you.’
But Barrett disagreed with the president, telling him ‘I look like shit.’
Trump then asked him how he was doing, then said: ‘You’re a champ. You’re fighting it right?
Barrett referred to his Celtic ancestry and replied: ‘That’s what the Irish do — right?’
Trump agreed, saying: ‘Yeah that’s what the Irish do — you better believe it.’
Barrett, whose chat with Trump was arranged by his sister – a local Democrat council woman – also told the president how he’d love to attend one of his rallies.
He previously shared his sister’s political leanings, and voted for Barack Obama to become president in 2008, but was won over by Trump ahead of the 2016 presidential election and switched allegiances to the Republican party.
Afterwards, the elated patient told the New Haven Register: ‘I can’t believe that he called — I’m ecstatic about it.
‘It was an amazing experience’
Barrett told Trump that if he lives long enough, he will be voting for him again in next year’s presidential election.
Barrett received his call from Trump after the president read a newspaper report about the CF sufferer. A local government official will bring Barrett a gift from Trump and his family this weekend.
