An impostor got nabbed and arraigned in court for impersonating a police officer and swindling unsuspecting people of their hard-earned money.
An Ejigbo Senior Magistrates’ Court 2, on Tuesday in Lagos slammed a N100,000 bail on a 33-year-old unemployed man, Abah Arome, standing trial for allegedly posing as a police officer.
Abah Arome has been arraigned before an Ejibgo Senior Magistrate Court for presenting himself as a police officer. The 33-year-old is accused extorting money from people on false pretense.
According to the prosecuting officer, Cpl. Femi Adeleye, he told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 19, at about 2.30p.m at Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos. Adeleye said that the offence contravened Section 77 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The charge read: “The defendant on the said date and time did claim to be an officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by wearing a police uniform. He also stood on Iyana Ipaja Highway and extorted money from commercial drivers and motorcyclists plying the said route,’’
Arome pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of impersonation. The Magistrate, Mr A.A Fashola, said the accused should also present one surety in like sum, who must be resident in Lagos, as part of the bail conditions.
Fashola added that the surety, whose address must be verified, should also present evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The magistrate adjourned the case to Nov. 23.
