A doctor's misdiagnosis has resulted in the unfortunate death of a bubbling seven-year-old.

Malaika Adam

An unfortunate rookie doctor's misdiagnosis led to the death of a seven-year old, an inquest heard.

Seven-year-old Malaika Adam died from an inflammation caused by the ruptured organ within two days of her examination by Dr Suren Sivakumar who had finished training ten days earlier.

The doctor, who did not even take her temperature, told the hearing: “She did have some tenderness which was in my mind in keeping with a tummy bug. I did not feel that this child had an acute abdomen on this occasion.”

Her mum Donna Howe, 38, of Basildon, said: “Malaika’s skin colour was not right, nor were her lips and she had a temperature.”

Paediatric surgeon John Orr told the hearing: “GPs will see few cases of acute appendicitis during their careers.”
