Yellow Fever Kills 23 As 169 Cases Recorded

The breakdown of the 169 suspected cases of yellow fever reported in 41 LGAs in five states were from the epidemiological summary from week 35 – 37 (2019).

 
About 23 persons have been reported dead following a recent outbreak of yellow fever in Bauchi, the National Centre for Disease Control, an agency of the Federal Ministry of Health, said on Tuesday.

The organisation said 169 suspected cases had been reported in 41 local government areas in five states of Bauchi (35 cases), Borno (65), Gombe (7), Kano (4) and Katsina (58).

The NCDC stated this in its August 31 to September 11 situation report on the cluster of yellow fever outbreak in Bauchi, released to journalists in Abuja.

The report read, “Nigeria is currently responding to an outbreak of yellow fever, in people who are either resident in or have visited Alkaleri LGA in Bauchi since August 1, 2019.

“Suspected and confirmed cases with an epidemiological link to Bauchi have been reported in Borno, Kano, Gombe and Katsina states. The first confirmed case was reported on the 29th of August in a case from Kano who had visited Yankari Games Reserve, Alkaleri LGA, Bauchi in August 2019.

“A total of 23 deaths has been recorded among suspected cases: Bauchi (9), Kano (1), Katsina (13), with fatality rate of 13.6 per cent.”

According to the NCDC, the National Yellow Fever Technical Working Group on September 5, 2019 activated the national Incident Management System to coordinate the response activities.

The NCDC said, “The number of samples collected among suspected cases is 151 (89.3 per cent); number of presumptive positives is 10 (IgM positive on serology) and one inconclusive was recorded (Borno-6, Kano-1, Katsina-3 and 1 inconclusive from Borno).

“All have been sent to Institut Pasteur Dakar for further testing. A total of 15 cases have been confirmed in the Nigerian Testing Laboratories, using RT-PCR: (NCDC National Reference Laboratory Gaduwa (14); Lagos University Teaching Hospital (1) from Bauchi (8), Katsina (5), Kano (1) and Gombe (1).”
