A Nigerian university student has reportedly drowned while celebrating the nation's independence day in Katsina.

A student of the Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State, has died. The institution’s spokesman, Habibu Matazu confirmed the development.
The deceased, a 100-level Physics and electronics student, identified as Suleiman Aliyu, drowned while swimming at Dutsinma Dam.
It was reported that Aliyu and some other students had gone to the dam to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day anniversary when the incident occurred.
He has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
The University spokesman said the institution was in mourning over the incidents.
