A protest is ongoing in Afghanistan following the gruesome murder of 9-year old girl who was beheaded by militants.

Afghans are walking on the streets with the coffin of 9-year old girl who was beheaded by extremist militants through the streets of Kabul.

Protests and demonstrations have taken place in cities all over Afghanistan after the massacre of seven people from the Hazara ethnic minority  which included a nine-year-old girl named Shukria.

In total, four men, two women and the child were found on Saturday in a rural town in the southern province of Zabul which sits near to the border with Pakistan’s Baluchistan province where dozens of Hazaras have been killed in terrorist attacks in the past decade.

It is feared that the assailants were militants linked to Islamic State jihadists or the Taliban insurgency rife in the region.

Protests began on Monday and on Wednesday in the Afghan capital as demonstrators walked through the streets with the coffins of the victims, which included the body of Shukria.

The protestors were shouting anti-government and anti-Taliban slogans, with some protesters attempting to storm the presidential compound.

No group has claimed responsibility for the killings, and Afghan officials have yet to state who they believe is responsible.

The area, south of Kabul where the victims lived, is home to a number of Taliban factions.

"The deliberate murder of civilian hostages, including women and children, is particularly abhorrent," says Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations' top official in Afghanistan.
