A former victim of the deadly Boko Haram group, 36-year-old Meriam, explained that the girls were brainwashed before embarking on suicide operations.

One of the women rescued from Boko Haram captivity has revealed how the sect prepared young women for suicide missions.

The former victim, 36-year-old Meriam, explained that the girls were brainwashed before embarking on operations.

She made the revelation to the New York Times at a camp for internally displaced persons in Borno State.

“The Boko Haram would recite the prayer for the dead, then they would put on the hijab, covering the suicide belt,” Meriam said.

“After they had prepared, they said, ‘God will forgive us,’. Then, they would enter the vehicles, and they would send the women away,” she added.

Members of the sect were also said to have raped hundreds of their female victims who were warned to cooperate or be killed.
