An Indian government study published on Wednesday in New Delhi said at least 350 people were killed in that country each year by elephants, NAN reports.

The study, which was carried out by the Association of Indian Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, also stated that crops covering about 13,000 hectares of land were damaged by elephants in 2013 and 2014.

Electric fences and deep ditches were inadequate to keep the pachyderms out of agricultural fields, the study said.

It added that the fences and ditches, which were regularly built without the participation of the locals were often poorly constructed and not properly checked.

Some 30,000 elephants live in India, according to official figures, and the numbers are growing.

Animal campaigners estimated that between 2008 and 2011, some 121 elephants were killed in the wild in India, with another 50 dying in road accidents and 111 dying because of electric shocks.
