About 30 doctors and nurses have successfully separated two conjoined twins identified as Ervina and Prefina joined at the head in Vatican City hospital.

Ervina and Prefina were joined at the head, but surgeons were able to separate the two-year-old girls.

Their mum, who is from the Central African Republic, said she wants her daughters to "become doctors to save other children".

Thirty doctors and nurses separated the conjoined twins in an operation that lasted for 18 hours at Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital.

After the operation, the twins' mother Ermine said: “Ervina and Prefina were born twice. If we had stayed in Africa I don’t know what fate they would have had."

Ermine, who was thankful to the hospital staff, hopes Pope Francis could baptise her daughters who turned two on June 29.
