Many Nigerians do not know a lot about rape. This may be due to low sensitisation on the issue, but it is said that ignorance is no excuse. There are different kinds of rape and one of the most common is statutory rape which happens when an adult has sex with someone who is younger than the age of consent (18 years).
Ignorance on the part of this 11-year-old girl, who lives in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, made her to say she did not see her 20-year-old neighbour having sex with her as rape. Adams Oliyide allegedly raped his 11-year-old neighbour on a different number of times, and according to the girl, she enjoyed the act and does not see it as rape.

Sometimes, the girl would sneak into Oliyide's one-bedroom apartment of her own accord and allow him have his way with her. He would give her money and warn her not to tell anybody about it.
After he was arrested, Oliyide admitted to having sex with the girl on several occasions. The girl also said she did not tell her parents because she loved him. However, he was charged with rape under Section 137 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011. Ironically, Oliyide pleaded not guilty to the rape charge. Ignorance is really no excuse.
