Russia bombs ISIS in Syria with submarine

The Russian defence ministry has confirmed the strikes on ISIS targets as far as 1,500 miles away.

The footage shows the moment Russia upped its bombing campaign against ISIS in Syria with cruise missiles fired from a Mediterranean submarine for the first time. The strikes were aimed at two ISIS strongholds around the city of Raqqa.

Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu told state television: "We used Calibre cruise missiles from the Rostov-on-Don submarine from the Mediterranean Sea.

"As a result of the successful launches by the aviation and submarine fleet, all targets were destroyed.

"The Calibre cruise missile once again showed its effectiveness over long distances."

Russia has been conducting air strikes targeting Islamic State (IS, former ISIS, ISIL) militants and other terrorist groups in Syria since September 30.

Last week, the UK decided to participate in the air strikes in Syria, extending its existing bombing campaign against ISIS in Iraq.

British made their second round of strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria on Friday, again hitting oil fields.
