A most sad event has claimed the life of a beautiful undergraduate student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo after she tried aborting a pregnancy with the help of a herbalist.

A 20-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo has lost her life after a local herbalist who was also her lover performed a botched operation to help her terminate her pregnancy.
The herbalist allegedly gave her concoction to drink for her pregnancy to be terminated. The girl identified as Wunmi Agbeluyi who is a National Diploma (ND) Science Laboratory Technology died as a result of complications, the Vanguard reported.
According to investigation, the herbalist who put the girl in a family way was an apprentice to Wunmi's father and had shown interest in her a longtime ago. It is believed the two have been in a relationship which later resulted in the pregnancy. Investigation revealed that Wunmi's father died not long ago which gave the herbalist the opportunity to probe further into Wunmi's life and grant him more access.
The unnamed herbalist began to fend for her and started taking care of her after her dad passed away. That was how the two became an item until the pregnancy resulted.
Police investigation also revealed that the two had opted for an abortion as they were not ready to raise children. As a result the herbalist gave her some concoction to drink hoping that the pregnancy will disappear but that only resulted in severe abdominal pain. Seeing that the concoction was about to kill her, the herbalist rushed Wumni to a private hospital where the doctor attempted to flush the baby. It was when things had gotten out of hand that the herbalist was instructed to rush the woman to the state teaching hospital. That was where Wumni was confirmed dead.
When a friend informed Wunmi's sister identified as Funke of the the sad event, she was shocked to realize the extent of damage that had happened and before she could offer help, Wunmi died. Angry and wounded, Funke and other family members reported the matter to the traditional ruler of Ijare, Olujare of Ijare who advised them to lodge a complaint with the Police.
The suspect and the medical doctor were later picked up and detained.
Funke said: “it was a friend called Omololu who informed me that my sister has been admitted in the State specialist hospital and was critically ill.
“ I rushed to the hospital to meet my sister in pain complaining of stomach ache. She insisted that the doctors should not give her injection or drips as prescribed. While we were in the hospital Wunmi refused to disclose why she was given the concoction.
“It was after the burial that people came to me and narrated what really happened to my sister.
“I informed the family members and we reported the matter to the Olujare of Ijare who asked us to lodge a formal complaint with the Police.
“I was informed that someone gave her concoction to abort the pregnancy but when she complained of abdominal pain, she was rushed to the hospital .
“I was later informed that the doctor in the private hospital billed them N25,000 and an initial deposit of N20,000 was paid. It was the doctor that helped them to flush out the remnants of the pregnancy.
“But when the pains persisted I learnt she was rushed to the specialist hospital where she later died." she narrated.
Funke said the family would want justice to be done and pleaded that the police should not sweep the matter under the carpet.
“We will pursue the matter to a logical conclusion and those behind the death of our last born should be made to face the music”, she said.
Contacted, the Police Image Maker Femi Joseph said the suspect is in police custody. Joseph assured that the matter was still under investigation and findings would be made public.
