Edo Teachers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Allowances, Promotions

In the letter addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki, the teachers noted that pending issues of teachers welfare and condition of service discussed and agreed with the governor on July 17, 2020, had yet to be addressed.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers in Edo State had threatened to embark on a strike if the state government fails to improve their condition of service and pay teachers’ outstanding welfare allowances.

The teachers, in a letter dated November 23, 2020, and signed by the state chairman of the NUT, Pius Okhueleigbe; and Secretary, Mike Moni Itua, threatened to go on strike should government fail to meet their demands.

In the letter addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki, the teachers noted that pending issues of teachers’ welfare and condition of service discussed and agreed with the governor on July 17, 2020, had yet to be addressed.

They said their union planned to meet with the governor on December 3 or December 4.

The union’s seven-point  demands include payment of 2013 to 2015 promotion arrears of “primary schoolteachers in Oredo, Orhionmwon and Uhunwonde local government areas.
