Mourinho was axed by the Premier League champions on Thursday with the club languishing at the wrong foot of the table.

The sack came just seven months after lifting the title, which was followed with Mourinho agreeing to a lucrative four-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have lost nine times already this season and another defeat to lowly Sunderland could see them drop into the relegation zone.

The players arrived for training as usual on Friday morning and were soon joined by the club's Russian owner, who watched the training session before speaking to the squad.

Guus Hiddink remains the hot favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, with Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone tipped as long term replacements.

But with no deal yet in place, Steve Holland and Eddie Newton have taken training today and look set to be in charge for Saturday's encounter with Sunderland.
