A newborn baby girl who was dumped in a toilet after birth has been rescued after her cries were heard from inside the pit.

A newborn baby girl was rescued from a pit toilet in Ramatlhwa village, Limpopo, a South African province on Monday.
According to a Limpopo police spokeswoman, Colonel Ronel Otto, residents alerted police after they heard sounds of a baby crying from inside the pit toilet.
“Members of the police search and rescue unit eventually succeeded in bringing the newborn girl back to the surface. She was taken to hospital for treatment,” Otto said.
Police are now investigating the incident and a search for the baby’s mother is already under way.
