The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly on Monday elected Mr Onofiok Luke as its new Speaker.
Luke, a member representing Nsit Ubium state constituency of the state, was elected following the nullification of the election of the former speaker, Aniekan Uko (PDP- Ibesikpo/Asutan Constituency) by the Court of Appeal last week.
According to NAN, 24 members out of 26 were present during the session on Monday.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after their sitting, the new speaker promised to work for the unity and progress of the state, saying his election was the will of God.
“We ascribe everything that happened today to God. Only God should take glory,” he said.
Also, the House leader, Aniefiok Dennis (PDP) representing Etinan constituency was replaced by Aniekan Bassey (PDP) representing Uruan constituency.
Dennis’s replacement followed the nullification of his election by the appeal court sitting in Abuja.
The new speaker was said to have left guests who turned out to honour his election at the Light Power World ground, along Two-lane within the state capital, Uyo, on their feet for more than three hours as he continued to release unstoppable Christian songs.
Luke is a two-term state legislator and the immediate past chairman of the House Committee on Education. He served as personal assistant to Godswill Akpabio, the former Akwa Ibom governor, for three years.
