Newly elected President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged by the Egyptian government to fulfil all promises made to Nigerians.

The Egyptian government has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to stay focused while fulfiling the promises outlined in his inaugural speech.

Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sameh Shoukry, who addressed a news conference in Abuja, last weekend, also spoke of the need for both countries to improve on existing economic relations.

He described the inauguration as historic, stating that the Egyptian government was eager to strengthen its ties with Nigeria.

Shoukry, who was in the country to represent the Egyptian President at President Buhari’s inauguration, said: “We look forward to the newly elected government to successfully implement all of the issues that the President raised in his statement yesterday (Friday) and I am sure that the evaluation will always be that of the Nigerian people.”

“We are looking forward to the time for the visit. Therefore, we look forward to working closely with Nigeria and new Nigerian government,” he said.

He added: “We are not satisfied with the current level of economic relations between Nigeria and Egypt. The volume of trade between the two countries is very limited for a country of the size of Nigeria and a country of the size of Egypt."
