National Assembly members elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have vowed not to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The legislarors said they would all remain in the PDP and provide the nation credible opposition that would ensure good governance.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued by the lawmakers at the end of their one-day retreat in Port Harcourt.

In the communiqué, signed by the Chairman, Organising Committee and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; and the Secretary, Organising Committee, Leo Ogor, the leadership of the PDP noted that the party would be playing the role of the opposition at the centre for the first time and said the retreat was to prepare the national assembly members for their new role.

According to the communiqué, the lawmakers said: “To continue to work as a body and speak with one voice at the National Assembly to further the party’s ideologies, interests, and national good; “To shun defections and remain in the PDP to revive its political fortunes and give Nigerians better leadership;

“To provide the nation with a healthy, robust, vigilant, and responsible opposition, to promote democratic good governance, and development.”

The PDP leadership also pledged to work with the members of the party in the National Assembly and give them the maximum support to excel as a vibrant opposition in parliament.
