According to a recent statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, on its website the Code Division Multiple Access ,CDMA active subscriber number plunged from 2.13 million, in February 2015, to 2.11 million in March.
However, the report revealed that the number of active subscribers managed to grow to 2.23 million active subscribers by April this year.
The situation became worse as offices and homes that were using CDMA lines for official and personal communication, abandoned them for GSM mobile phones, a situation that further dwindled CDMA subscriber growth.
Also, the report indicated that while operators of CDMA, are struggling to survive in the industry the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) operators are recording steady growth in their subscriber number.
Most CDMA operators like Starcomms, Reliance Telecoms, Intercellular, Zoom Mobile, Cellcom, were either swallowed up by other serving CDMA operators, or have gone out of telecoms business completely.
The only surviving CDMA operators, are Visafone and MultiLikns, but Visafone is already talking with MTN for a possible acquisiton.
