According to a report by Daily Post, the lawyer to the family of late Daniel Ikeagwuchi, also known as sleek, who was killed by a police officer in Port Harcourt in 2020 has decried the continued delay in the payment of compensation to the deceased’s relatives one year later.

Sleek was shot dead around a supermarket at the Elelenwo axis of Port Harcourt on September 19 2020 by a mobile police officer.

The family lawyer Noble Njoku in an interview in Port Harcourt on Wednesday said the police had failed to respond to the several demand letters sent to the headquarters in Abuja.

The lawyer said the police was yet to reach out to the family despite the November 2020 court judgment ordering a 50 million naira compensation to the family.

In his words, “We had filed a fundamental human right suit on 15th October 2020 and judgment in that suit was delivered by the honourable high court sitting in Port Harcourt in November 27th 2020 for 50 million naira compensation which doesn’t really go to compensate for the loss of life of the young man who was up and coming and never going to come back again”.

“However we have made efforts to send the demand letters to the Nigeria police through their offices here in Rivers State and the IG has neither reached out to the family till this moment nor even paid that money”.

Earlier, the father of the slain boy, Dominic Ikeagwuchi accused the police of “paying lip service to the case”.
