The federal government has revealed plans to pay students studying educational courses in public universities in Nigeria N75,000 per semester.
Also, their counterparts in the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes will get N50,000 per semester.
These are part of the efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to make educational courses and the teaching profession more attractive to Nigerians.
The disclosure was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of his ministry, Sonny Echono on the occasion of the celebration of the 2021 World Teacher’s Day.
Not done, he added that negotiations are ongoing with the state governments across the country to grant automatic employment to graduates of education from public tertiary institutions.
Such persons must, however, sign a bond to serve their states for five years.
“Undergraduate students of B.Ed / B.A. Ed/ BSc. Ed in Public institutions are to receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester while NCE students will get N50,000.00 as stipends per semester,” he said.
“Federal Government should find the modality through which respective states’ governments could provide automatic employment for NCE graduates at Basic Education level.”
He added that “Beneficiaries must attend public institutions only and sign a bond to serve their state for five (5) years on graduation.”
Meanwhile, the federal government has revealed that teachers will start receiving the new salary structure from January 2022.
Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at a symposium organised by the Ministry of Education, Naija News reports.
Nwajiuba, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Sonny Echono, said work was being finalised on the new salary structure.
According to the minister, the incentives promised by President Buhari ranged from allowances, housing, training, elongation of service year from 35 to 40, among others.
