Court To Hear CNG’s Case Demanding Referendum

The lawsuit filed by the leadership of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) seeking a referendum for Biafra agitators will be heard by a Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, Nov 1.

Recall that in June, the coalition had sued the National Assembly praying the court to force the defendants to suspend the ongoing constitutional review exercise.

Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the spokesman of the CNG, explained that a judge had been assigned to hear the suit.

The leaders of the group and the suit filed by the plaintiffs, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, Nastura Ashir Shariff, Aminu Adam and Balarabe Rufa’i l joined the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; and the National Assembly as defendants.

According to the CNG, the defendants should immediately provide a framework for the actualisation of agitators’ demand for self-determination instead of constitutional review.

According to the CNG spokesman, “One of the issues for determination before this Hon. Court in the substantive suit has to do with the legal obligation of the 2nd – 4th defendants/Respondents to provide a framework that will pave the way for the self-determination of the South-eastern states so as to leave the geographical entity called Nigeria before any further step is taken to review the Constitution?’
