Nigeria's Former Finance Minister, Okongwu, Dies At 87

He served as Minister of Finance under the government of General Ibrahim Babangida.

 

Dr. Chu SP Okongwu, Nigeria's former Finance Minister, has passed on.

According to reports, Okongwu died on Wednesday morning in Enugu. 

He was aged 87.

He served as Minister of Finance under the government of General Ibrahim Babangida.

He served for eight years in Babangida’s government, firstly as Minister of Finance and National Planning; and subsequently as Minister of Cabinet Affairs and later, Minister of Petroleum. 

The octogenarian was born on September 23, 1934 in Nnewi, Anambra State.

On Sunday, October 3, 2021, some gunmen burnt down Dr Okongwu’s house in his village, Otolo Nnewi.

A family source claimed he never recovered from that tragedy.
