A local government chairman in Rivers state has narrowly escaped death after his life became a major target for men of the underworld.

 
The caretaker committee chairman of Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers State, Hon. Rowland Sekibo on Saturday escaped assassination following an attack on his Port Harcourt residence by unknown gunmen.

This is as suspected sea pirates yesterday morning killed one person during an attack on a passenger boat travelling from Kula community to Abonnema headquarters of Akuku-Toru local government area of the state.

According to Leadership, the gunmen shot sporadically at the residence of the caretaker committee chairman, located along Rumuolumeni -Iwofe Road in the Rivers State capital.

It could not be ascertained if any life was lost during the attack, but sources in the area said Sekibo, who is a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not within his residence during the attack.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmad Muhammad said the Police was yet to get any report on the attack on the residence of the local government chairman.

Muhammad said the State Police Command will swing into action once it receives an official complain from the victim.
