A whale beached in Britain struggles to survive

A 30-tonne sperm whale was found washed up on the British coast, Hunstanton in Norfolk today.

Kate Dunbar, Hunstanton town councillor, said the whale is 'very much alive' but it is unlikely to stand much after getting stuck in shallow water, adding: 'It looks like the tide's on its way out'.

According to reports, at least 23 whales from the same pod have been washed up dead on the North Sea coastlines of Britain, Holland and German in the past month.

Despite the whale being alive it appears it will be left to die. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue said there would be no rescue, adding the whale would be taped off because 'The best thing to do is to let nature take its course'.

Biologist, Ben Garrod who is heading to Hunstanton told the BBC: 'It will be very distressed right now - the moment they start beaching their bodies go into shutdown to support their organs and cardiovascular system.

'There's no evidence so far that it's pollution or boat strikes, and there's no parasite load on these things... whales get washed up, it's a very cruel part of nature.'
