Two children have been seriously injured after a brick wall collapsed on top of them as they walked to school.

BBC reports that the youngsters, aged five and seven who were accompanied by their mother, were airlifted to hospital after being trapped underneath rubble.

The 10ft wall fell in the village of Bretforton, near Evesham Worcsestershire, this morning.

Police, fire and ambulance crews all rushed to the scene and worked to free the boy and girl from beneath the heavy bricks. They were in quite a serious condition.

They were both airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital with serious leg injuries after being pulled from the rubble.

This morning it emerged that workers from Wychavon District Council had only been to check on the wall a week previously over concerns it had started to lean to one side.

It is understood the wall, which sits on private land belonging to homeowners of a detached property, collapsed due to gale force winds as Storm Imogen batters Britain.
