A family escaping from harsh cold weather has met cruel fate after they fell inside a Changchun Reservoir and only one person could be saved from drowning to death.

The woman was successfully rescued

A mother has been dramatically saved after she was pulled from a frozen lake in which the rest of her family had already died.

The mother was heard screaming for help as she struggled to tread water and lift herself out of the freezing-cold water in China.

The Mirror reports that the first responders to the accident were local villagers living near the Changchun Reservoir, into which the mother, her son, and her father-in-law had fallen while they were trying to take a shortcut on the frozen surface.

The police in Qixia City, in east China’s Shandong Province could only rescue the mother after her family died in the incident.

It was a dramatic rescue but a successful one

In the end it was the heroics of 58-year-old officer Jiang Tao that saved the woman, as he crawled on the surface on the lake and made a large detour from the left in order to reach the victim from the other side.

Jiang was pulled onto the surface of the lake first, while the mother was later also rescued from the water and rushed to hospital.

Reports said authorities later also recovered the drowned bodies of the woman’s son and father-in-law.
