Akwa Ibom State Government has ordered the demolition of shrines, graveyards and other structures which have suddenly sprung up on roads undergoing construction in the state.

During an inspection of the 4.6km Mbiafun Nkwongo-Nung Ukim Road by Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Works, Ephraim Inyang, the state government, ordered the demolition of shrines, graveyards and other structures which have suddenly sprung up on roads undergoing construction in Ikono Local Government Area of the state.

The directive was sequel to the emergence of shrines, graveyards and emergency buildings on the road soon after the commencement of construction work with alleged dubious plans to extort or force the government to pay compensation on the land where those structures are erected.

The commissioner went further and warned that what the government required from the people at this austere period was cooperation and not arm-twisting to enable government to provide the people with developmental infrastructure and dividends of democracy.
