Government offices, courts and some financial institutions were put under lock and key to ensure total compliance as labour leaders moved round to monitor the strike.

The Kwara State capital city of Ilorin was locked down on Tuesday and Wednesday in compliance with the directive of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal government, Daily Post reports.

Government offices, courts and some financial institutions were put under lock and key to ensure total compliance as labour leaders moved round to monitor the strike.

While some banks remained open to customers in the State capital, all government offices and courts were deserted.

Some of the banks, however, later joined the strike.

Chairman of the State Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Tunde Joseph, confirmed that his union did not join the action because “the national body is against the strike.”

Although the State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Murysla Saheed Olayinka could not be reached at the time of this report, the Chairman of the National Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees, Comrade Kayode Ehindero described the strike “as a success.”

He said “our union is on strike. NLC is supposed to be on strike.

“I have carried out picketing for our branches to ensure that everybody is at home. Some banks are not working, it shows that the strike is a success.”
