The arrest of student leaders/activists, Femi Adeyeye, Phillips Olatinwo, Giwa Temitope and Ayodele Aduwo, by the personnel of the Lagos State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday for protesting against the astronomical increase in tuition fees by the management of University of Lagos (UNILAG), has been condemned by the Socialist Workers League (SWL).

In a statement by its National Chairperson, Frances Akinjole and the National Secretary, Mobolaji Otuyelu, the SWL said that education is a fundamental human right that is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“Increase in fees at the university and other tertiary institutions is a blatant attack on this right.

“Rich people and their cronies in government send their children and wards to school abroad while they allow our institutions to be left dilapidated and worst still with the recent wave of hike in tuition fees.

“We stand in solidarity with the demands of the student movement and call for all students bodies, trade unions and other civic organizations, both nationally and internationally to stand in solidarity with the UNILAG students,” the SWL said.
