A man is to pay for his insensitive act after he drove for several miles with his wife hanging on the roof of the car.
Richard Addy
Richard Addy was arrested after driving six miles - with his screaming wife on the roof, a Mirror Online report shows.
The 69-year-old man was arrested and charged with reckless driving after officers stopped him in the town of Stuart, in Florida.
According to a police report, officers stopped Addy in the early hours of March 22 after noticing “a female riding on top of a vehicle as the vehicle came to a stop” at South Kanner Highway and Southeast Monterey Road.
Police helped the woman, identified as Addy’s wife, off the roof. Addy then reportedly told officers he and his wife had argued after drinks at a restaurant in Palm City and at a bar at a resort on Hutchinson Island.
The couple were staying at the resort because of work being done to their Palm City home. After an altercation at the resort, Addy said he decided to leave.
But he claims to have had no idea that his wife had managed to climb on to the roof of the 2011 Toyota SUV.
“Addy stated at the first traffic light after the Sewall’s Point bridge, he heard her banging on the roof and realised that she was there,” a report states.
Bizarrely, the police reports claim he then carried on driving with her on the roof because he did not have a mobile phone to call police.
“Addy stated that he drove to the Martin County courthouse in the hopes of finding police presence,” the report states.
Locating no law enforcement officers there, Addy drove to the intersection where he was finally stopped by a patrol car.
The drive from the resort on Hutchinson Island to the intersection where Addy was stopped is approximately six miles.
Addy, who reportedly smelled of booze, said he parked his other vehicle, a silver Mercedes, at a nearby pawn business.
He told officers he was taking his wife to that vehicle.
Addy was arrested on a reckless driving charge and also received a ticket for permitting a passenger to ride on the outside of a vehicle.
