The Governor of Jigawa State, Muhammad Badaru has taken a step to empower women in the state by donating 8,000 goats to the widows.
The Governor made this revelation in a press conference with newsmen in Dutse, the state capital, yesterday, June 22, 2015, of his intention to encourage the widows to be more productive.
"A number of 25 and 30 windows will be picked from the 287 wards in the state to serve as beneficiary of the palliative measure being set up. This is for an agricultural purpose which will entail giving two she-goats and one male goat to each widow to rear. This will be for the purpose of breeding them effectively to ensure a multiplication", Badaru stated.
It is believed that the goats which are of a high economic value will generate profits due to their capability to give birth 2 to 3 times in a year, an initiative that the governor hopes will empower the widows thereby alleviating poverty.
