The elderly man from Ireland was sitting on his toilet when the rat attacked. A councillor said it happened because of local flooding in the area.
The man was rushed to a Co Cork hospital where he received treatment.
The councillor is now warning others to keep an eye out for the rodents - especially during flood times.
According to the Evening Echo, the incident was reported to Cork County Council during a meeting on Monday.
Councillor Noel Collins had earlier asked them to investigate the idea of possibly flushing rat poison into the sewer system.
As reported by the Irish Mirror, he said: “The flooding resulted in another problem for residents, that of rat infestation, which really upset many families, mentally and physically, and indeed, one elderly gentleman suffered a rat bite to his posterior while using his toilet, and had to receive immediate medical attention."
He explained that a plumber had found a broken sewer pipe nearby, which is believed to have been how the rat got into the system.
The council warned that flushing the poison through the water system could contaminate other water sources - before adding that Irish Water are responsible for vermin control in the system.
Cllr Collins added: “I would advise homeowners to keep their toilet seats down when not in use, and to watch their posteriors.”
