A petty thief who stole a rug carpet due to hunger was sentenced to seven strokes of the cane and washing toilets in Abuja.

Daniel Sunday, a 24-year-old man, who stole a carpet at the Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja, has been sentenced to seven strokes of the cane as well as washing the court toilets by a Gudu Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The prosecutor in the case, Corporal Israel Nongo, told the court that one Jacob Abineke‎ had reported the matter at the Apo Police Station on June 20, stressing that Sunday stole a rug carpet on the said date and kept it near the complainant's duty security post‎ in the estate.

He said that the complainant observed the rug, adding that later on, when Sunday came for the rug, he was arrested and the rug recovered from him.

Sunday however pled guilty to the offence and begged for leniency claiming that poverty pushed him into the crime.

He was spared a prison term by the judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who charged him to desist from crime or he will meet his bad when next he is brought to court.
