A Nigerian chant performance artist, Amarachi Attamah, is of the opinion that a groom pouring away the drink given to him by his bride during a traditional wedding symbolizes “rejection.”

She stated that it means that the couple would divorce even before the marriage is yet to start.

According to Igbo custom, grooms are supposed to drink the bride's palm wine as a symbol of acceptance and commitment.

However in recent times, some grooms have been seen pouring the drink on the ground over fear of poisoning.

“Are you aware that in Igbo cosmology, pouring away the drink handed to you by your bride symbolizes rejecting her—essentially a divorce before the marriage even begins?” she wrote.
