Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started in four shops before spreading rapidly across the market, which serves as a major commercial hub for students and staff.

A fire outbreak on Tuesday night devastated the community market at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, destroying multiple shops and leaving traders and students grappling with significant losses.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started in four shops before spreading rapidly across the market, which serves as a major commercial hub for students and staff.

The affected section, popularly known as Maami Market, housed computer centres, restaurants, clothing shops and other essential businesses.

Despite the intervention of the university’s fire service, which arrived after an alarm was raised, the inferno had already caused extensive damage before it was extinguished.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

However, authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the incident.
