35-year-old Nigerian Man Held On Drug Trafficking Charges D!es In Maldives Prison

He was taken to the prison's medical centre for treatment after he fell while playing with other inmates in the prison yard.


 

A 35-year-old Nigerian national who is awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges in Maafushi Prison, Maldives, was reported dead on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

Maldives Correctional Service identified the deceased as Emmanuel John Paul Okonachi.

He was taken to the prison's medical centre for treatment after he fell while playing with other inmates in the prison yard.

Within four minutes, he was transferred to Maafushi Hospital, where he passed away at 5:20 p.m.

Okonachi was being held in custody on charges of possession, use, and trafficking of drugs in Maldives.

Authorities confirmed that he was not receiving treatment for any chronic illness.

The Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, National Integrity Commission, and the Prosecutor General’s Office have been informed of his death.
