Nigerian Footballer Dies After Tragic Road Accident in Uganda (Photo)

The 29-year-old was reportedly heading to a club training session after dropping off a friend at Entebbe Airport when the accident occurred.

 
A Nigerian footballer, Abubakar Lawal has died in Uganda.
 
The forward who plays for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, tragically passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, following a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala.
 
The 29-year-old was reportedly heading to a club training session after dropping off a friend at Entebbe Airport when the accident occurred.
 
Lawal joined Vipers SC in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali and played a crucial role in their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title victory. This season, he had made eight league appearances.
 
Before moving to East Africa, Lawal had a notable career in the Nigerian Premier League, representing clubs such as Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and Nasarawa United.
 
Vipers SC expressed their deep sorrow in an official statement:
 
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
 
Fans, teammates, and the football community have been mourning his loss, paying tribute to his dedication and contributions to the sport. Lawal’s passing is a significant loss to both Vipers SC and the broader football fraternity.
